Many of our customers ask what the difference is between tuxedos and suits. In this article, we'll discuss a few of the major and minor differences, as well as a few exceptions!

Physical Differences
Whether the suit has satin or not is the most important difference between a suit and a tuxedo. A tuxedo typically has satin facings on its buttons, lapels, pockets, and usually a satin stripe down its side. In most suits, there is no satin and the buttons are made of plastic or the same fabric as the rest of the suit.
In some cases, physical differences are more about accessories than anything else. If you're wearing a suit, your tie will likely be long and your vest will likely be high. Tuxedos are typically paired with bow ties, cummerbunds, or waistcoats.
Exceptions
A "Tropical Black Tie" is basically just a white dinner jacket, which is an exception to the rule. Compared to a suit, it's a little less formal than a black tie tuxedo. The latter doesn't always contain satin.
